As an Honors graduate from the NC State College of Engineering with a B.S. in Computer Science, Marty exemplifies all of the qualities and success that should be expected with such a prestigious degree. His degree from NC State came at an important transition time in computer science technology and Marty has excelled through these thirty years always striving for excellence and results while pushing the envelope towards the next level of innovation. Currently Marty is a Senior Director at Cisco Systems managing a 150 person engineering group in the next horizon for many companies - Security and Trust. But journeys start with first steps and even as a young engineer with Bell Northern Research he worked on developing features that improved call control and delivered five 9’s in reliability. He then delivered an architecture that enabled interoperability between long distance carriers and with this success, BNR sent him to Japan to create an architecture and develop this same interoperability in Asia. Marty led engineering teams in Japan and Canada to transform Japan’s long distance business into free competition proving great leadership with strong innovation and collaboration skills even very early in his career. Marty’s ability in building and leading strong teams into new areas of innovation and influence has flourished in his seventeen years at Cisco. In 2000, during a period of Cisco downsizing , Cisco brought Marty into the RTP location with the expectation that he would expand Cisco’s switching and routing dominance into the new world of Voice (VoIP) . His mission was to build a team of voice engineering skillsets, lead the transition and bring full engineering ownership into RTP. This was unprecedented at this time in Cisco. Within four years, Marty owned and led Cisco’s VoIP strategy for gateway products while again maintaining a five 9 reliability metric. In the same timeframe he also led the expansion from VoIP to Video over IP, a clear differentiator for Cisco that still has impact today. His ability to see the future and cause positive disruption to move the needle further while always keeping impeccable quality is unparalleled.Given this great success, Marty was again asked to start a new engineering organization focused on developing products for the United States government. This large and still influential group had to be in RTP and required exceptional talent and leadership to stand up to the specific nature of this market. The initial scope was broad and crossed many Cisco technologies adding requirements and products to portfolios where necessary to support our war fighters in harm’s way. These specialized programs centered on product hardening, voice call precedence, high definition video for deployments, and mobile vehicle routers for war vehicles. These features are now things we see often in many consumer products but very new for 2004, This team led by Marty opened many doors not just in government sales but in defining Cisco as a Security Leader. The Government Team expanded its scope and is now the Security and Trust Organization including many facets that manage Cisco’s overall security profile. Marty is a senior leader in the Engineering area and his scope of responsibility has grown to include developing and deploying hardware and software security components for all Cisco product offerings. He collaborates with executives across the company in order to ensure key security features are embedded to protect our customers and their consumers from malicious attacks. In just three years the security posture of our products has increased from less than 20% to over 60% with over $13B in secured bookings. Marty also continues to lead an extended global government organization responsible for building and certifying Cisco equipment for government deployments. These certifications enable over $1.6B in sales with close to 90% portfolio protection. He continues to influence security decisions routinely meeting with leaders in both Washington, D.C. and governments around the world to influence security requirements and technologies that protect citizens from nation and state attacks. While the business impact of Loy’s work in the security and trust space is significant, the far greater outcomes with these security technologies is the protection of human society. Imagine a large city like Chicago getting its power grid hacked and taken down for a week. No grocery stores, no running water. Imagine 7,000 jets in the air over the United States and the FAA gets its network taken down across the country. Imagine the New York Stock Exchange going down in the middle of a trading day. All would create chaos and extreme dangers to our countryMarty continues to give back not only Cisco but to his community and Alma Mater as well. Within Cisco, Marty openly takes the time to connect not only with his team, but with anyone that needs help. His reputation as a strong leader and team builder keeps him in high demand for private meetings and public presentations. He values diversity within his own team and takes the time to mentor and meet with interns and new graduates as they start their careers. Marty frequently gives back to his community through multiple volunteer agencies. Specifically he is engaged with the NC Foodbank, NC Diaper Bank, Habitat for Humanity, Disease Research Cures and STEM programs within local schools. His involvement with NC State continues through his team with presentations to Computer Science classes on topics such as securing today’s networks and types of attacks taking place in today’s world. He also actively works with NC State’s Computer Science internship program sponsoring summer internships and full time new graduate hiring. Finally he is an active participant (along with myself as Cisco’s representatives) and other local business leaders that meet with Dean Louis Martin-Vega on how N.C. State University impacts the economies both locally and nationally.Marty’s exceptional career has clearly centered on the education received from NC State, but his influence and manner in achieving great success comes from his heart. He is a true leader building strong teams not individuals; he is not afraid of disruption and changing the landscape; his impeccable standards inspire those around him to give their best. His combination of strong influence and innovation skills are rare and he is very deserving of a place in the CSC Hall of Fame.
