Nirmit is a Research Staff Member at IBM T. J. Watson Research Center. Nirmit’s contributions have not only advanced computing technology, but have also served social needs. As a result they have garnered high media attention. Nirmit is leading creation of Mesh Network Alerts, the world's first scalable ad hoc network of mobile phones to relay potentially life-saving severe weather information to mobile phone users even when they are not connected to the Internet. There have been several attempts in the past to create such a “parallel” peer-to-peer Internet. However, these attempts have failed due to a lack of sufficient density of subscribers in an area to relay messages. Within six months of launch, more than a million people in countries such as India, Thailand, and Indonesia, where connectivity to all citizens is a serious challenge, are already using mesh Network Alerts. Nirmit has also participated in IBM’s efforts on the Olympics and more visibly in the US Open for using attendees’ phones to provide simulcasts of a game. Nirmit graduated with a PhD in 2008 and joined IBM Research Labs in Bangalore. He was identified as a star within IBM, taking a two-year assignment at IBM TJ Watson. This assignment was to produce the Global Technology Outlook, which reviews technology trends and the status of expertise within IBM. IBM’s CEO uses the final report to guide corporate strategy. Selection to work on the report is an honor since only two employees are chosen out of IBM’s 300,000 workforce. Upon its completion, Nirmit was courted by several research groups in IBM and persuaded to return to the US.The media coverage that Nirmit’s research has received includes the following.1.
