A two-time graduate of the department (BS & MS), Dr. Kevin Clark is a Director of Original Animation, Preschool at Netflix. Dr. Clark is also a full professor in the Learning Technologies Division of the College of Education and Human Development, and the Founding Director of the Center for Digital Media Innovation and Diversity in the College of Education and Human Development at George Mason University. His research interests include the role of interactive and digital media in education, broadening participation in STEM careers and disciplines, and issues of diversity in children's media. Dr. Clark’s research includes a one of a kind national study funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation that examined the Digital Lives of African American Tweens, Teens, and Parents. Prior to becoming a professor, Kevin was part of an educational technology startup company, where he designed and managed the development of educational video games, which were used as curriculum in hundreds of school districts across the country, for the first-generation Sony PlayStation video game console.In addition to his scholarly activities, Kevin is widely recognized for his work as a children’s media consultant with more than 20 years experience as a designer, advisor, and consultant to technology and media organizations such as: Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Jim Henson Company, DHX Media, Disney Junior, Toca Boca, Hasbro, Mattel, Facebook, YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Studios, Pinna, and WGBH Kids. Kevin previously served on the board of directors for Eastern National, and a member of the National Parks Service Advisory Board – Education Committee. Currently, Dr. Clark, serves as a member of the board of directors for Fred Rogers Productions, the planning committee for the Walter Kaitz Foundation’s Hollywood Creative Forum, and an advisor to the Children's Advertising Review Unit (CARU). Kevin has been recognized with countless awards throughout his illustrious career, and these are just a few examples. In 2003, he was named the winner of the United States Congressional Black Caucus Education Braintrust Champion Award. Kevin served as a Fellow for the 26th Annual Television Academy (Emmy) Foundation Faculty Seminar, and was recognized by former President Barak Obama as a White House Champion of Change for his work in supporting and accelerating STEM opportunities for diverse students, schools, and communities. In 2017, he was presented the Alcalde Family Presidential Medal for Faculty Excellence in Diversity & Inclusion by George Mason University. Kevin is a founding member of NC State’s Society for Multicultural Scientists, led the effort to endow the College of Science’s Wandra P. Hill Scholarship, and was honored in 2019 by the NC State’s Black Alumni Society as one of their 40 for 40 Awardees.Kevin holds both a B.S. (1989) and M.S. (1991) in computer science from North Carolina State University and a Ph.D. in Instructional Systems from Pennsylvania State University.
