Nate Johnson graduated from N.C. State with a double major in meteorology and computer science in 2000. He is an award-winning broadcast meteorologist and a proven technology leader whose ‘behind-the-scenes’ leadership impacts millions of lives on a daily basis.Early in his career, Johnson worked as a Data Services Meteorologist developing a first-of-its-kind system, since patented, to diagnose road conditions in real time based on current and antecedent weather conditions. This became the prototype for XM NavWeather, currently deployed in millions of vehicles.As a rising star in weather technology, Johnson caught the eye of broadcast technology leader –WRAL. They hired him in 2007 to provide customized technology-driven features to its DualDoppler5000 radar and interactive online weather experience. Essentially Johnson was hired to help provide differential services and value for WRAL in a highly competitive market. During his 10 years at WRAL, Johnson rose to the position of Meteorologist/Executive Producer, constantly proving how technology-dependent the field of meteorology truly can be. In this role he collected and analyzed data to forecast weather and created visuals for the broadcasts. His work combined knowledge of weather as well as computer science to create an innovative and useful way to predict the weather and present those forecasts to WRAL’s viewers, website visitors, and app users. Johnson is the winner of number of local, regional, and national broadcasting awards for his work in the field. He is the winner of 4 regional Emmy awards, 2 regional Edward R. Murrow Awards, 4 regional AP Awards, 1 national Emmy Nomination, and 4 regional Emmy nominations. He has been recognized with the prestigious ‘Seal of Approval’ by both the American Meteorological Society (where he is a ‘Certified Broadcast Meteorologist’) and the National Weather Association.Johnson currently serves as Director of Weather Operations for NBC Owned Television Stations where he provides operational support and coordination for more than 100 meteorologists and on-air talent at 40 network-owned television stations in large and medium markets located nationwide.Johnson teaches a broadcast meteorology course at NC State and works with the Athletics department to ensure safety of Wolfpack fans at home football games and other outdoor events.
